![]() ![]() ![]() The primary purpose of DLC is to extend the original game code/assets with new stuff and not release a completely new game. So is this a good idea? Is it something we will see more of in the future? Even some Fallout or Elder Scrolls add-ons, with some tweaks, could be their own release.Īnd releasing these as stand-alones could serve as paid demos of sorts, so if the person likes it they will seek out the main game. Sure, this wouldn't work for map packs or new missions within the main game but why not for side story or relatively unrelated stories? Resident Evil 5: Lost in Nightmare, Dishonored: Knife of Dunwall & Brigmore Witches, Assassin's Creed III: Tyranny of King Washington, Assassin's Creed IV: Freedom Cry, The Last of Us: Left Behind, Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea, and Enslaved: Pigsy's Perfect 10 could all be stand-alone releases. If it were available as stand-alone, that person may download it immediately but it's not an option. So why can't someone download Minerva's Den right now by itself? If someone is interested in that but don't own a copy of Bioshock 2, they either buy a cheap used copy of the game (no money to publisher), or just forego downloading it at all (no money to publisher). All of those could have required their partner game to work but all seemed to do quite well by themselves. There have been some examples like Infamous: Festival of Blood, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, and the retail releases of New Super Luigi U, GTA IV episodes, and Undead Nightmare. ![]() I know one of the reasons for DLC is so we don't trade in our games (even though TLOU DLC won't be out until like 10 months after the initial release) but don't publishers lose out on money by not releasing some of their DLC as stand-alone downloads? Reading about the new details of The Last of Us single player DLC, and how you need your copy of the game still, has brought up something that I had been thinking about for awhile. ![]()
